Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. ...continue

Brevard Public Schools were awarded the Carol M. White Physical Education
Program Grant on July 1, 2005

This is a 3 year federal grant with the purpose of (1) increasing percentage of students participating in physical education activities; (2) increasing percentage of students who will make progress toward meeting the state standards for Physical Education.

The grant began with 11 pilot schools (listed in red below) and 1 adapted itinerant physical education program. These 11 schools were also the teachers that assisted in writing and/or securing grant funding with the strong support of Valerie Harville. At the end of the first year each pilot teacher was required to mentor two more schools and in year 3 (2007-2008) each of the schools will mentor two more schools to eventually reachat least 3/4 of Brevard Schools with  lifelong wellness initiatives.

Safety Patrols

At Roy Allen, we currently have 23 Safety Patrols who work to help make our campus a safer place to learn and play. Their duties include positive role modeling, morning and afternoon supervision posts, attending monthly meetings, assisting with supervision at before and after school events, hosting the school‘s Holiday Shop with the PTO (each December), planning/assisting/participating in school programs that build school and/or squad spirit such as athlete of the year recognition, patrol pin recognition, celebration gatherings, Dodgertown Kid’s Day trip, Southwest Airline Adopt A Pilot Program, etc……..

In May, applications will be offered to all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Once completed applications are submitted, the current patrol squad determines who will be part of the new team based on completed applications, teacher/staff/parent input and sometimes interview selection processes when necessary.

Coordinated School Health Committee (CSHC)

Promoting healthy and safe behaviors among students is an important part of the fundamental mission of schools, which is to provide young people with the knowledge and skills they need to become healthy and productive adults.
Improving student health and safety can

  • Increase students’ capacity to learn,
  • Reduce absenteeism, and
  • Improve physical fitness and mental alertness.

Our Coordinated School Health Committee is committed to the challenges set forth by the CDC (Center for Disease Control). In the past three years we have gained approx. $2300 in funding through Partner Project Grants to help us support health initiatives for our school community. For the past two years we’ve acquired and/or purchased materials to create a health cart that can be used to help enhance nutrition and health lessons throughout the campus. This year we are in the process of purchasing exercise equipment to encourage more variety in our staff wellness offerings each Thursday afternoon. Thanks to staff and business partner support, we have been able to offer classes in line dancing, heart health, wellness topics, walking clubs, strength training, endurance training and basketball. WE have also been able to encourage participation in classes by offering two movie passes to any staff member who logs in a certain number of workouts in a given time period.
The Coordinated School Health Committee also tries to host at least one nutrition and/or safety event on campus each year. Some of the past events have been Walk to School Day which encourages safe traveling to and from school and Got Milk Day which focuses on the importance of including dairy products into your diet daily.

If you need further information or would like to be part of the planning committee for next year’s goals, please feel free to contact any of the 2006-2007 committee members listed below. We welcome any new faces and ideas.
